Tribhuvan University’s Semester system from the perspective of students.



 Students hear, bear and treat as dear because of fear.


In an interview Rector Sudha Tripathi said “Semester system will discourage absenteeism, compel students to complete assignments and will help the teachers know their students’ weaknesses and strengths, provide more time to teachers to work on research and assignments, and provide timely feedback,”. I have no questions in these sayings because these are the main features and purpose of semester system, and if the semester system is properly working they must be there. However, the main questions are, Do Tribhuvan University professors go with pointed purpose? Are there all these features in TU semester system? What strategies or trainings have been given to TU professors to achieve these purposes?  In another interview, Hridish Pokhrel, an executive director at Office of Planning Directorate at TU, said that, “in the initial phase students may face some problems regarding exam schedule and syllabus completion”. His argument sounds so agreeable with regard to the initial phase of anything we vow to accomplish. In fact, the difficulties are the natural truths. However, up to when initial phase? Is TU still in the initial phase of semester where sixth batch is studying? Can TU chairpersons escape from their responsibilities saying initial phase? These are the genuine questions which are unanswered. Here, these questions pave way to my article which will come out with students’ perspective with the question how students are feeling about TU semester system!
Semester system is taken as students oriented learning system where students are active as well as at center, and professors are only facilitators. Professors give instruction and students have to follow their direction and instruction. Students have to take part in each class and conversation. Regular attendance is mandatory so frequent class test and regular evaluation compel the students to keep themselves updated. Students should give presentation which increases students’ confident to deliver their ideas in a mass. Study becomes research based so students do not remain limited with course book. Generally, these are the positive aspects of semester. However, students who are studying at TU argue that they have been partially implemented by the departments of TU. To be exact, one student Anjan Bam opines “there are more negative sides than the positives, so it has been just formality”. Unmanaged time schedule, professors’ authority, no complain by students, unqualified teachers and students, limited time unlimited task, regular attendance, unnecessary pressure, no use of modern technology, unmanaged classroom, semester only in master degree, more vacation and outdated syllabus are the negative side of TU semester system.
Students are victim of unmanaged time schedule of TU. Shushil Poudyel, just passing out student of Education, says “I think semester system divides the year in two parts having two academic sessions but I spent all most three years to pass out for forth semester, does TU pay for extra one year?”. It is the bitter reality of TU which proves that TU does not care about students’ time because they do not know the value of Time.  Furthermore, because of unmanaged time schedule even in class by professors, semester system has been limited time, unlimited pressure. Students have to do regular homework, presentation, attendance, read bulky book, interact with professors are good things but work for term paper, prepare for internal exam and final exam at the same time give more pressure to students. I have seen many students who are exchanging term paper because of time pressure and exam pressure. So, limited time becomes main source of pressure and headache for students which only contribute for deep pressure not deep knowledge of course.
Students tends to study being exam oriented. There are no less than four courses in one semester and each course contains three/four books as a complete course. Especially in Nepal, there are many vacations in the name of different festivals and memorable day. In semester system, there is busy schedule of teaching but TU is still following the annual system’s legacy in the case of the vacation. It seems to be not concerned with the course completion, rather it is more inclined to the vacation. Because of such vacations and others occasional holidays, the academic courses are hard for TU to complete in time. But the students have to take its burden. they have to finish the course themselves either through self study or through taking tuition. This is how they are compelled to make preparation for the final exam. So, the students become more exam oriented than knowledge oriented. Moreover, professors are guided by false conception. What all they think of the best teaching strategies is by giving more pressure and assignments. They thereby expect the students to improvise their academic skills. But they are not ready to think about its negative consequences. They seem too be ignoring the fact that the strategies they are co-opting do not improve students’ quality. Rather it causes the frustration among students. Therefore, there are many cases of dropping-out because of such problems at TU.
Students rarely complain about Professors though they are unsatisfied with their lectures. Semester system has given full authority to Professors for the internal assessment.  many lectures and professors come to the depart by political force without experience and knowledge misuse given authority. Professors have full authority of forty marks out of hundred so they deal their complain showing forty marks in their hand. Some lectures and professors directly tell “you went against me wait” so students think, if I complain against professors, complain and disagreement will be reflected in marks sheet. Furthermore, they do not go against professors rather Students hear, bear and treat as dear because of marks fear. For instance, student Samikchha Rai says “students do not go against professors because they have forty marks in their hand, once I complained against one lecture he gave me only nineteen marks out of forty”. Not only from central depart, Kumud Kharel, TU student of engineering also says, “internal marks threatening, the old syllabus much older than human civilization and Kasto ramro deko thiye; kasari lagyo” kind of experience he has collected. So those students who becomes nearer and dearer by flattering deserve good marks because of biasness.
In semester system, because of fee, regular attendance and assignments those students who are from lower correspondingly medium economic background can not admit. Especially in central depart Kirtipur classes are only in day time so students who want to handle job and education at the same time, have to quit either semester system or job. Therefore, semester system has become the system of rich and upper class not for economically weak. For economically weak and poor, it has been just dream of skyscrapers who are in street. Furthermore, there are not updated syllabus, students take entrance exam but all will be selected so not qualified student are selected, professors come with political power without publishing even one journal in international forum. No use of modern technology as well as classroom are unmanaged. More importantly, semester only in Master degree has been main problem because students are not in habit of semester system up to bachelor so they feel over pressure and quit the semester.
To sum up, I know, my article seems more pessimistic regarding semester system at TU. But you must know I am writing about TU semester system from the perspective of students. I have talked with many students and they indicate more negative side than positive so I wrote as it is. According to students, Unmanaged time schedule, professors’ authority, no complain by students. unqualified teachers and students, limited time unlimited task, regular attendance, unnecessary pressure, no use of modern technology, unmanaged classroom, semester only in master degree, more vacation and outdated syllabus are the negative side of TU semester system. However, there are also positive sides but they are over shadowed by negatives.

Moving away from tradition: in 'Broken Images’ and Devkota’s The Lunatic

This paper attempts to explore the common theme shared by two poems: ‘In Broken Images’ by Robert Graves and ‘The Lunatic’ by Lakhsmi Prasad Devkota. Both of the poems represent the universal conflict of human race: being traditional and moving away from the traditions to think of new perspectives. We can find the idea of ‘traditional versus radical thinking in every society. Moreover, always the established thought and values become privilege. It is very difficult to introduce new thinking in old society. Both poets’ main concern is to show the established values of society may not always beneficial. Thus, they are encouraging the readers not to accept those values without questioning. They also try to make clear about the difficulties one faces for his/her new way of thinking.
            ‘In Broken Images’ written by an English poet Robert Graves and ‘The Lunatic’ written by a Nepali poet, both represent the contrasting nature of thinking and try to establish the difference between traditional thinking and radical thinking. Not only thematically but also structurally these poems are divided into traditional and radical thinking. The poems contain two voices: one is the voice of ‘I’ and another is the voice of ‘He’, ‘You’ and ‘friend’. The voice of ‘I’ in both poems represents radical thinking and the voice of ‘He’ in ‘In Broken Images’ and ‘You’ and ‘friend’ in ‘The Lunatic’ represents the traditional or stereotypical thought of society. Comparatively, Graves presents two voices more explicitly than Devkota. Although the radical voice is dominated in ‘The Lunatic’, the rooted voice of traditional society is not more explicit than in Graves’ poem. Devkota ends every stanza by addressing the friend, “Surely my friend, am I insane/ Such is my plight”. In these lines, there are two subjects: one is ‘friend’ and another is ‘I’. Thus, structurally this refrain has shown the binary thinking of society. Likewise, ‘In Broken Images’ contains seven couplets. Each of the first line hold the idea of ‘He’ and second line hold the idea of ‘I’. In other words, all the couplets show the binary thinking of ‘He’ and ‘I’. Thus, both of the poems structurally represent the two part of society: traditional and radical.
                        The poets portray the picture of two worlds: traditional/old and modern/new in terms of thinking process. Although their major concern is how people think, both poems represent the world with demarcation of traditional and new. In comparison to ‘The Lunatic’, ‘In Broken Images’ lines are explicit to show the binary conflict between traditional thinker and radical thinker. In this poem, the first line of each couplet is the perspective of traditional thinker and the second line of each stanza presents the voice of radical thinker.

Although only third stanza shows explicitly the two binary worlds, the whole poem is about poet’s dissatisfaction towards the society’s rigid intellectuality in ‘The Lunatic’. Like Grave, Devkota also shows the two voices of traditional thinker and radical thinker which is explicit in stanza no. three. In this stanza, ‘I’ represents radical thinker and ‘You’ represents traditional thinker.

         You work with your senses five                                 With the sixth I operate
         Brains you have, my friend                                        But the heart is mine

Through these lines, we can say that both poems are encircling around the main idea that is traditional values and new achievements are always in conflict.
            In both poems the poets have used irony as a poetic tool to give emphasis on the modern thinking over traditional. Through irony, the poet emphasizes the ideas by hiding it from readers. According to M. H. Abraham, “In most of the modern critical uses of the term “irony” there remains the root sense of dissembling or hiding what is actually the case; not, however; in order to deceive, but to achieve special rhetorical or artistic effects” (135). Therefore, irony is such a powerful device to show the importance of something or someone without foregrounding. In other words, the purpose of poets to use irony is not to create illusion among readers, but to help the readers to escape from the confusing state of mind.
            Devkota’s speaker repeatedly claims himself as insane person by saying “Surely, my friend, am I insane”. However, in reality he wants to make clear about the worse sides of society by showing himself a stupid person. He says that “Look at the strumpet-tongued dance of shameless leadership! / At the breaking of the backbones of the people’s rights!” (273).These lines give the reason of why he has become insane. His insanity is reaction against the society’s negative treatment to the helpless people. Actually he is not insane but the society gives him a tag of insane because he has pointed to the society. Although he claims that he is insane and the society in intelligent, the poet’s main purpose is to show the stubborn thinking of society is harmful for the people’s prosperity.
            Likewise, ‘In broken Images’ starts with the couplet which says, “He is quick, thinking in clear images; / I am slow, thinking in broken images” (1-2). These lines explicitly show that ‘He’ is clever and ‘I’ is dull. However, the purpose of the poet is just opposite: to show the hidden reality of society which is not very intellectual which we think. The purpose of the poet becomes apparent in the last couplet which says that “He in a new confusion of his understanding / I in a new understanding of my confusion”. Because of the quickness, ‘He’ entrapped in the confusion whereas the ‘I’ gets new understanding because of his slow and diverse investigation on something. Like Devkota, Graves has also used irony to question the existing values of traditions. According to Michael Joseph, “one’s immediate impression of ‘total abstraction’ is challenged by a sense of irony- or a cow-jumped- over- the –moon logic- that inheres in ‘In Broken Images’ (670). It becomes clear from Joseph’s line that irony is a greatest tool, which injures someone without making any scars on skin. For this reason, both poets have become successful to attack on the traditional thinking of society.
            These poems also imprint the bitter picture of society in which education or the cognitive abilities of human beings are always restricted by the principles of the society and the system that is rooted in stereotypical values. Through this poem, Devekota is challenging the criteria of intellectuality in traditional society.  According to Shreedher Lohani and Moti Nissani, “Wearing the persona or mask of a lunatic, the poet gives a memorable expression of … a clinically accurate indictment of the hollowness of the so-called intellectual aspirants and leaders of time, and maybe of any time” (269). ‘In Broken Images’ the speaker is marked as ‘slow’ because he is interested in fragmented knowledge and he is rejecting the universal and absolute values of society. Society always prefers to the idea, which are explicit and clear. Thus for society thinking about clear images is intellectual work. For the speakers of both poems to think beyond the existing values is the way to get newness in one’s life. Just opposite, for ‘He’ and ‘You’, a representative character of tradition, to think within the framework is rational. However, in reality ‘He’ is contrived himself within a boundary. According to Natalia Stachon,
One of the pair is able to think quickly and clearly, while the other thinks slowly and ‘in broken images’. The former’s apparent advantages become a disadvantage to him because he grows complacent and unable to think outside the box anymore, while the latter individual, unsure and under confident of his mental faculties, works harder on them and is thus able to become a better thinker.
 Stachon’s view also helps to make clear about the demarcation of two world in the ‘In Broken Images’. Both of the poets present the two juxtaposing views in order to show the conflict in society that can find in every part of the world. It is one of the reasons, which has brought two poets in one point who are from different geographical and cultural part of the world.
Grave and Devkota present the society as it always prefer to walk in a plain way. The persons who are rooted in tradition they do not bother themselves to construct new way. In the poets’ view, the society is like a train, which only runs on the road of the traditional values and conventions. But the poets want to be excavator and bulldozer. At very first they seem to destruct the structure but in reality, they construct the new road after destruction of old structure. Likewise, both poets have created the poetic persona who strikes everything the old structure presents, making themselves odd and mad in front of society. The following lines from the poems show the society’s preference towards the easy and plain way.
                     He is quick, thinking in clear images;
                     I am slow, thinking in broken images. [(1-2) Graves]
                     You decant when I go muddy.          
                     When I am muddled, you are clear. [(38-39) Devkota]
         In Graves’ view, the society always think of clear images which do not bothers the thinkers mind and seen as ‘quick’ and fast. It means it always wants to form the lines of scholars who do not want to take any risk. Devkota has also similar kind of thought. In his view the conventional thinker always choose to be decanting, but the poet wants such a person who take risk to jump into muddy place to find new truth.
         ‘In Broken Images’, Graves uses the words like ‘questioning’, mistrusting’ repeatedly. The significance of using such words is to encourage the readers to question whatever things come before them. In other words, he is teaching to doubt on everything because he knows that by doubting on thing and ideas, one can get away from the state of confusion. In comparison Devkota is very radical to express his views which are opposite than social norms. In some lines, he shows his anger by saying;
                     When man regards a man as no man
Then gnash my teeth and grind my jaws, set with two and thirty teeth. (138-239)
                     I look at this inhuman human world
                     Like a tongue of fire (145-146)
         According to him, the world is ‘inhuman human world’. It means the world full of human being but no one can feel the presence of human with humanity. He also says that this world has become empty because of lack of mutual relations. He cannot endure such inhuman society and he comes out of rage in his body. This is very radical view of speaker, which directly attacks the society’s rules and regulations.
         In conclusion, though both poets are very radical and against the traditional rules and regulations of society, they are advocating for the betterment of society and people. Both of them are against the mainstream thought of society for the positive changes. In both poems, there is poetic persona whose revolt leads towards the newness and freedom from the constricting view of society.

The Place Where Nobody Wants to Be.

I have brunt all my three diaries which had carried my past experiences. For personal narrative, I am compelled to remember my past what I really do not want. Is it right to remember my past while I have thrown all my past diaries in the dustbin? Remembering past does not mean being weak and emotional? Now I believe in what had happened was best, what is happening is best and what will happen in my future will be also best so does it make any sense by remembering and writing about my past experience? I am here and I proud to be this strong Sangam and this is because of my past bitter experiences and my commitment so do I have to present my past positively or negatively is the question. Now I believe, we should be always optimistic and positive so I think I should proud of my past than regression. There are a lot of questions which remain unanswerable however I reveal my past in this paper. 
I am Sangam Babu Malla. There are six members in my family. My father is pensioned teacher now he is doing social service because of his position as Wada president in last local level election. My brother serves in Nepal Army and sister works as a cashier in a company. My mother and sister in law remain at home as house wife. I am doing MA in Kathmandu.  My permanent address is Morang district, Kerabari Gaupalika Wada no: nine.
Our family migrated to Morang from Okhaldhunga in 2063 BS.  I had passed class six in Okhaldhunga however I compelled to join again in class six because of my father. We five members were in new place and father went Okhaldhunga in his teaching. The place was new, environment was new, and people were new for us. We were struggling in the new place for our survival. I was new student for school as well as to my own class. I had not recognized all students in my same class. However, within few days I became very close to one girl and used to share my difficulties to be familiar with students. Her name was Bindu Rai and I still vividly remember the first slap of that long haired boy in my cheeks. The boy was anger with me because I was close to Bindu who was his forceful girlfriend but I did not know. I was talking with her and he came near to me with five six boys and slapped me without saying anything. He threatened me and he left the place. I could do nothing, I was helpless, I did not have friends who could help me. Bindu was staring in my red face and I was in fear of that boy to whom I did not recognize. After that day I did not speak with her but she was excusing me. This event is small but I mentioned here because we left our birthplace and went in new place where I got first slap from different person within fifteen days without doing wrong but I could not do anything which frequently hints me.
The days were passing; I started to recognize all students, teachers, people and neighbors in new place. In eight class I deserved third position as well as I became the secretary on the child club. Child Club became my good platform to expose me. I collected different experiences from club in two years. I still have to thank to an organization (CDF Nepal) for sponsorship. After two years I passed the SLC being school topper and left that school as well as child club. I joint at Sukuna Multiple Campus. I passed +2 and I joint bachelor in same college.
The child Club had aroused desire to me to do social work because we used to conduct different program related with children and society. After leaving school I was so closely observing my village and its activities. There was not transparency in different organization and budget. There were few leaders who used to handle the social organization and used to conduct the national budget. They used to choose the developing plans without asking villagers, go VDC office, take budget and used to implement their plans according to their interests. Nobody was daring to question over their deeds that I really did not like. 
I was doing bachelor and very much conscious about that strong nexus of corrupted few people. I planned to open a social organization collecting fresh youths and villagers who want to question over their monopoly of that few leaders because I had known very well single personal could not do anything to them. They were so organized that each people had to ask them to do anything because they were taken as the well known person. They were from all parties but they were never raising the voice against each other. They used to conduct the different development plans but they were not transparent that nobody knows the about budget, way of doing and people did not ask
I discuss with different youths and people about my concept of youth organization. They become very much positive and ready to support my concept. We especially youths become united and decided to start one social organization. We named Kosis Youth Club which was already existed there but dead. We also registered in district administrative office having different objectives. I became secretary of that club and we conduct football tournament as our first work. There were all most fifty active youths who had paid two thousand rupees for membership and our objective was to destroy that same people’s social nexus. We wanted to make naked to them about their doing. We decided to observe the account and their progression of different social organizations where the few people were handling all the things. I was the main designer to do that. We wrote letter to the office and said to submit their annual progression and account within seven days otherwise we will case in related office.
I still vividly remember, one unknown person made me one call offering one hundred thousand to stop that program. I did not listen him. We used to be in gathering and my priority was unification of youth rather than old because they are fresh and strong in their decision. We frequently asked for document and finally they gave. We collected all document and I distributed these document to each member of the club and said please study well and come with some errors. We gave one week to study documents. We study well and I surprised just looking at the account of Bhaluwa Saving and Credit Limited. There was not any account of thirty eight lakha rupees in their document. Others friends also came with other organization’s weakness. We all got surprise just looking that unbalanced account of all organization.
 We had to show this monopoly and corruption to all citizens and had to take their support to our further step. I called meeting and deeply talked about our further step. I purpose to conduct SARBAJANIK SUNUWAE program inviting national level Television channel where the president of our local organization will face the public and media. Some few friends were against this program but majority was in support. Finally we decided to conduct this program.
I sometimes alone smile just remembering their response about our decision. They tried their best to stop that program and I still remember that I had stopped to receive the call from new number. They were trying to persuade us, trying to threaten us, trying to create difficulties in our program. We were thinking we are doing what we had to do but they were falsifying us. However, we remained strong in our decision and continuing our effort to make our program successful.  We tried to call Avenues Television but we could not so we decided to call Arena channel. We wrote letter to all president to come being responsible to their organization. We had already set the questions to ask and distributed to the public with strong evidence. It was the right time to me to unmask them not only in local public but to all people who were watching our program in television. I was asking many questions with evidences and cross questioning and some presidents had become unanswered. We made that program successful but because of this program three president of organization had to face difficulties and they were angry to us specialty with me because they had taken me as the main designer of that whole program.
It was Shawna fifteen, my mother and sister were making Sellroti. I was living on a chair just wearing sendo and half paint. Police came at my home and arrested me. They were so inhumane that they even did not give time to change sendo and half paint. I was requesting to police but they were scolding me and one said “you will wear new dress in mamaghar”. I did not know why they were so rude and arresting me. I dared to ask why are you arresting me? what wrong I did? But I never forget that cruel face who punched in my head in front of my Mummy and said “do not be over smart and cleaver, we will massage you in mamaghar”. I remained silent and did not speak anything. My mother started to weep asking for my release but they were forcefully pushing me in their jeep. I was between two police and my tears were falling unknowingly.
Jeep reached near to police thana. They caught my arms and take to one room that was totally silent and surrounded by iron. I was said to enter that room and they locked me inside. It was all most six PM. I was vacant and do not know why they are taking me to this unknown place. One police were moving nearby my door but was not speaking anything. I was crying silently and the condition of that time I cannot express in words. I remembered my mum, family, friends and college friends. My tears were not asking to fall.
 After passing half an hour one person called me who was taking a paper in one hand. I went near to him. He was outside and I was inside. He gave me paper that was all about my cause and detail of arresting. He introduced himself as an officer of sector forest officer kerabari. He asked do you know why you are here? I said no sir. He asks another question, have you taken any woods from Garamjhoda Community Forrest? Yes sir I had taken two days ago. He again asks, do you have bill of that woods? I said I do not have. He become a bit rude and says you don’t have to pay? He again asks the question without giving me chance to speak, how many woods hove you stolen from that forest? Who are others? I was surprised and I started to speak I am not thief sir. Yes, I took that wood in my home but I have consoled with president and secretary of the forest committee. I do not have bill now but I have asked five days to bill because there was not money to pay with my mummy. Daddy is in Okhaldhunga for teaching. The secretary and president of our forest committee were also agreed and have given ten days to pay saying its also your forest do not worry for bill. Many members of this forest committee have taken woods first and paid later so do not worry to pay and I do not have bill sir.
The officer says “brother this is legal place we do believe in proves and documents. You are saying this but your president has cased you in our office, and if you have bill we release you, but now we cannot release, by low you are criminal, it’s our duty to file the case against you” I remain silent because I did not have bill to show him. It was almost nine PM, I was helpless and request him to leave me but he went without listening me. I become alone in that dark ironed room and one police was walking outside. I cried but nobody was listening me.  It was the great deceive by president of the forest committee to whom I had asked the question and could not speak in SARBAJANIK SUNUWAE in front of mass and media and had to face ....... She was taking revenge with me and I was weak by prove. I remain helpless and I had to reach in jail because of my commitment to make transparent and more democrat to my society.
            Next day, hundred of my villagers and supporters came but could do nothing for me. I was inside the room. I was listening the voice of Pujan Magar who was the president of our club. He was talking with inspector but inspector was saying same thing that you do not have bill so you can do nothing. The president of the forest committee was saying, we do can do nothing. Our woods was not in our placed area so we reported here. Sangam has taken this without informing us so we do not say anything for further process. Finally I became criminal and they decided to file the case. I was helpless, I could do nothing. I was compelled to face the punishment for that what I did not have any intention. Really sometimes we have to face such situation which we never imagined.
             Now, I cannot express all the experiences while I was inside the jail in words and I do not want too. One I really want to share is I was inside the room alone. Many people wanted to meet me but I refused to meet them. I used to think different things and used to weep alone. I never forget my mummy’s words while inside the ironed room.
 Once I had asked one question to one police who used to talk and want to be close with me that sir I am reading in bachelor level and I have listened that those persons who has faced the trial in court do not get government job and their name will remain in national criminal record so he/she does not get police report for job opportunity, is it right? But at that time he said do not worry, I also faced one case but I got this job so you also will get job and your certificate will work in everywhere. Till now I have not share this experience to my friends because I do not want remember. I have never asked the same question to anybody what I had asked to that police. Here I ask to you all? But I believe things happen for good reason so I do not regret, thank you.
